William Burtchaell joins Joe Heap (member of the first Holy Cross Hall of Fame Class) as the only two football players in school history to be named All-State three times. He was a four-year letterman in football, football co-captain in senior year, two-year letterman in track, track co-captain in senior year, and a four- year letterman in wrestling. Some observers rate Burtchaell one of the best lineman in Louisiana prep football history. During the 1947, 1948 and 1949 seasons, while Bill was selected as an All-State football player, the Tigers won 26 games, lost only 5 and tied one. In the 1947 season, the Tigers gave up only 45 points with 6 shutouts, and were crowned City Champions and CYO Bowl Champions. In the 1948 season, the Tigers finished
9-2, giving up only 52 points. The season was highlighted by a 55-0 victory over Jesuit, racking up the most points ever scored against the Jays, and the worst defeat suffered in the series. In his senior year, the Tigers continued their success on the gridiron as they compiled a 9 win, l loss and one tie record. The Tigers were South Louisiana Champions and played for the state championship.
