Danny Lyons earned 10 letters across all three sports during his athletic career as a Tiger when the school only offered football, basketball and baseball. Lyons was the All-Prep quarterback in 1934 in football and All-Prep in basketball in 1935. He helped lead Holy Cross to a football City Championship as a quarterback before breaking his leg halfway through his senior season in football in a 26-7 win over Bay St. Louis when the Tigers were 4-0-1. The team ended up finishing 7-1-2, losing in the state finals minus Lyons 14-0 to Byrd (Shreveport). He attended Loyola on a football and basketball scholarship and was elected to the Loyola Hall of Fame in 1967. As the quarterback for Loyola, he scored the only touchdown in a game against LSU in 1937. Lyons was equally talented on the hardwood where he formed the backbone of the Loyola basketball team for three years. As a captain his senior season he established a school record for points. Lyons stayed close to his alma mater and was selected as Holy Cross Man of the Year in 1967. Professionally, he coached basketball at Aloysius and was a high school and college referee for 25 years. He spent seven years officiating in the SEC. He served as the President of the New Orleans Athletic Association, President of the Loyola Alumni Association, and was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy in WWII. In one of his final athletic achievements at the age of 76 Lyons captured the racquetball title at National Senior Olympics.
