Michael Calamari was one of the toughest competitors of his era for the Tigers.Â
He was chosen All-Prep and All-Catholic in football, won the state championship in wrestling as a senior, and lettered in track.
Calamari earned a football scholarship to Tulane where he compiled three varsity letters and was named team captain as a senior in 1963. He anchored the right side of the offensive line for the Green Wave earning third-team All-SEC honors by the United Press International and the Associated Press. He was chosen to play in the 1963 Blue-Grey All-Star game and the 1964 North-South All-star game following his senior year.
He was named to the all-SEC team as a freshman and All-SEC sophomore team in 1961.
He was dubbed the most unselfish and spirited football player as well as the team’s wrestling champion during his junior season as a Greenie.
He was selected as the school’s Outstanding Lineman for Football and Outstanding Athlete for all sports.
He became the first Tulane athlete to earn the Outstanding Amateur Athlete of the Year award for both the New Orleans Athletic Club and the Veteran of Foreign wars Sports Committee.
After graduating from Tulane in 1964 he signed on to the Green wave coaching staff as a defensive line coach and scout, a position he held for three years before he left for a career in sales management.
Calamari was inducted into the Tulane University Hall of Fame in 2017 and is also a member of the Louisiana Italian-American Hall of Fame.Â
