  • Arguably the most decorated player in school history with state championships in four different sports – baseball (1944), football (1945), basketball (1944-45) & track (1945)
  • Was captain and starting halfback on the 1945 state championship football team earning 2nd team All-Prep honors
  • Played a key role in one of the best high school football games in prep annals – Holy Cross 33-32 win over Istrouma in the 1945 playoffs.
  • Mace scored on a 60-yard pass from Joe Ernst in the third quarter to complete a 19-point comeback. Moments before he intercepted a pass by the Istrouma QB and returned it 19 yards
  • Mace made his last prep game a memorable one winning the CYO Classic MVP award in a 6-6 tie against the undefeated LaSalle High (Rhode Island). Mace caught a touchdown pass from Joe Ernst for the Tigers only points.
  • Played catcher and caught two no-hitters from Dick Callahan as a sophomore on the Tigers 1944 state championship team
  • Despite not fielding a baseball team in 1945 Mace was ranked #2 player in the state by the Coaches and Media and represented Louisiana in the 1945 Esquire Annual High School All-American game in New York
  • Playing catcher and outfield for the East squad, he helped give manager Babe Ruth and teammates a 5-4 win. Behind 4-2, Mace led off the bottom of the ninth with a single and scored a crucial run in the comeback win.
  • Mace captained the 1946 baseball team where he caught future MLB player Lenny Yochim
  • Co-Captain with Hillary Chollet on the Tigers 1945 State Championship basketball team
  • Honor Roll student all four years and Class president his senior year
