Dalton Truax, Jr. was a four-sport Lettermen in football, basketball, baseball and wrestling. He was All-Prep and All-Legion in baseball, the State Wrestling Heavyweight Champ, was named to the Clarion Herald’s “Team for All Ages,” and played in the 1952 high school All-Star game. Upon graduation, he attended Tulane University on a football scholarship, where he lettered for three years. In his senior year, he co-captained the football team and received “The Most Outstanding Lineman Award.” He participated in the Senior Bowl game in 1956, (where Head Coach Paul Brown of the Cleveland Browns said he was “The Best Offensive Lineman I’ve coached in the Senior Bowl”), as well as in the Blue-Gray game the same year. In 1957, he was selected to play in the College All-Star game and also was selected to the second team All-S.E.C. and honorable mention All-American. Following his senior year in 1957, he was drafted in the third round by the Green Bay Packers. Before the start of the season, he was traded to the New York Giants and spent all of ’57 and part of ’58 with the Giants at the guard position. He missed the 1959 season because of injuries but moved to the Oakland Raiders for the 1960 season and was the starting left tackle. He played under Vince Lombardi at New York and on the same team as Tom Flores and Jim Otto at Oakland. In 1981, he was inducted into the Tulane Hall of Fame and is also a member of the St. Bernard Hall of Fame. Truax’s success at Holy Cross was a major factor in starting the line of Truax family members to attend Holy Cross, including cousin Billy, brother Mike, cousin Jesse, nephews Hank and Kurt Tatje and son Dalton, III.
