STEVE STANSON ‘94
BASEBALL
One of the most decorated pitchers in school history. The southpaw from Terrytown was a 5A-All State selection in 1994 after leading Class 5A with 102 strikeouts in 66 innings pitched his senior season. In addition to being a 2-time All-Metro selection and 3-time 10-5A All-District hurler for the Tigers, Stanson won the 1994 Coaches award and Team MVP as both a junior and senior. Stanson also played in the LHSCA High School All-Star game in Lafayette following his senior season.
Stanson’s career breakout moment came as a sophomore Stanson when he tossed a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts against Rummel in a 2-1 Holy Cross win. Another signature win came as a senior in the bi-district round of the playoffs when he struck out 19 of 21 batters in a 5-0 win versus Hahnville.
Was named USF&G Sugar Bowl Amateur Athlete of the Month in July 1993 following a stellar American Legion season in which he posted a 9-2 record with a 1.06 ERA.
Finished with a career prep record of 26-7 with a 1.20 career ERA that included 341 strikeouts over 231 2/3 innings pitched. In the seven losses he suffered Holy Cross managed to score a TOTAL of 3 runs.
Stanson continued his career at UNO where he blazed on the scene in 1995 by being named the Sun Belt Conference’s Freshman of the Year with an 8-3 record and a league low 2.20 ERA. Was named a First team Mizuno Freshman All-American, All-Louisiana and All-Central Region team. Ranked No.2 in the nation in ERA among Division I freshman. Was named Most Valuable Player of the Winn-Dixie Showdown as a sophomore after throwing 8-1/3 shutout innings versus Southern Miss in a 3-0 UNO win.
A shoulder injury as a junior at UNO cut short his career. Stanson resides on the West Bank and has a daughter named Haley (19).
