Kavanaugh was a four-year letterman in wrestling and two-year letterman in football.  As a student, he won the heavyweight state title in 1967 and was part of state champion teams in 1965, 1967, and 1968. The team won the City Championship in 1966. Coach Kavanaugh led the Tiger wrestling program from 1972-1996, capturing State Titles in 1983 and 1988.  His coaching career at Holy Cross not only included the head wrestling coaching position, but he also was an assistant coach in football and track, served as the school’s Athletic Director, was a teacher, and served as the school disciplinarian.
