Coach Carboni is a three-year letterman in baseball, twice earning All-District honors and serving as a captain of the 1968 team. His career continued as a junior college Honorable Mention All-American and All-Conference player before playing at Loyola University under legendary Coach Louis “Rags” Scheuermann. His teaching career began in 1973, teaching math, physical education and driver’s education at St. John Prep. He also taught at De La Salle and East St. John before returning to Holy Cross in 1980. After serving as an assistant baseball coach at St. John Prep and De La Salle, his first head coaching job was at East St. John. After two seasons, he was named the head baseball coach at Holy Cross, where he would serve for 25 years. Coach Carboni guided the Holy Cross-based Saucer Marine American Legion baseball team to a state championship in 1982. In 1987, Holy Cross was the state runner-up in prep baseball. In 1996, he was honored as the Class 5A State “Coach of the Year” for prep baseball. He is the longest tenured head baseball coach in Tiger history, and his 417 wins rank him as the winningest baseball coach in school history. The Holy Cross baseball program recognizes excellence on the diamond by giving the Lou Carboni Award to the most outstanding player. Known for his debate skills both on and off the field, it is only fitting that the Holy Cross debate program also recognizes the coach of the winning team at its national debate competition with the Lou Carboni Award. In addition, the outstanding freshman debater receives the same honor at its annual award ceremony.
