Hall of Fame
The Holy Cross Sports Hall of Fame is honored to place the "Men of Katrina" on the hall of fame wall. The young men had a life-changing event on August 29, 2005. Hurricane Katrina wiped the hopes and dreams away for many, but soon the "Men of Katrina" fought to return. The men used sports as a vehicle to leadership, and the young men fought to keep the Holy Cross Tigers' spirit alive.Â
As the word spread that our beloved Tigers were returning to the gridiron, the passion and will to return became the caveat of change. The "Men of Katrina" came back and became athletes in the sports of football, wrestling, soccer, cross country, baseball, basketball, track and field, and tennis. Their efforts and commitment put life back into a school that thought to be lost. Thanks to the "Men of Katrina" for rebuilding Holy Cross School during its darkest days.
Excerpt the 2005-2007 Yearbook:
"Shake Down the Thunder" took on a whole new meaning for the 2005-2006 school year. What promised to be one of the strongest football teams in recent HC history was greatly disrupted by Hurricane Katrina. Entire teams, coaches, and the schools as a whole were all sent miles from home to different states. The HC spirit shined through in the efforts of all in the months to come. Overcoming tremendous odds and adversity, the Blue and Gold led the way not only for the recovery of Holy Cross Athletics but for the entire metro area. With no facilities, equipment, and a skeleton crew of players, the Tigers salvaged the 2005 football season and charged the batteries for all teams, and sports season to come. Â
To mention names would be unfair, but the efforts of so many saved not only Holy Cross Athletics but our school community as a whole. We learned that Holy Cross is not a building, a place, or a thing, but it is a mission, a heartfelt devotion, a way of life.
